Labels of Clothes
I still remember the first time a customer sent us a photo of a shirt with the label already peeling off after two washes — brand new, never worn hard, just a cheap label that couldn’t hold up. A label is small, but it’s one of the only parts of a garment a customer actually touches and reads up close. At The Box Printing, this is a big chunk of what we do for apparel brands — everyone from someone cutting and sewing their first run of shirts at home to businesses moving thousands of pieces a month. Getting Labels of Clothes right sounds minor until you’ve seen what happens when they’re not.

Description
Why It’s Worth Paying Attention To
A label tells you the size, sure, maybe the fabric content. But it’s also stitched directly into something a person is going to wear against their skin, sometimes for years. If it’s crooked or the print is already fading in the store, that’s the first impression before anyone even reads a hangtag or checks out your Instagram.
Smaller brands especially get hit by this. You don’t need a huge ad budget to look legitimate — decent woven clothing labels or a properly printed tag do a lot of that work for you, quietly, without anyone noticing they’re doing it.
The Material Question
There isn’t really a “best” material here. It depends on the garment, honestly, and what you’re trying to spend.
Woven labels are the ones you’ll find in most jeans and jackets, because they hold up to repeat washing and they render fine detail — small text, tight logos — better than printed options do. If you’re producing in higher volume and don’t need that level of detail, printed fabric labels are usually the more practical route. They’re soft, which matters for T-shirts sitting right against skin, and they’re fine for things like care instructions where you’re not trying to make a big design statement.
Satin comes up a lot for baby clothes and lingerie, mostly because it’s gentle and doesn’t irritate sensitive skin. And then there’s leather or PU patches — these show up on denim, bags, outerwear, anywhere you want something that feels a bit more rugged or expensive to the touch. We can send physical samples of any of these before you commit to anything, which honestly saves people from guessing wrong based on a photo.
How Working With Us Actually Goes
Nothing complicated here. Send over your logo, tell us roughly what label type you’re leaning toward, share any references if you have them, and we’ll help you land on materials and finishes that fit your budget and your timeline. We send proofs before running full production — always — because catching a wrong color or a sizing mistake on a proof is a lot less painful than catching it on 5,000 finished units.
Apparel is most of what we work on, so we’ve run into the usual headaches already: labels shrinking after a wash cycle, ink bleeding, stitching giving out faster than it should. We test for that stuff before it becomes your problem, not after a customer emails you about it.

Fold Styles & Customization
Center-fold is what most people picture when they think “clothing label” — folded in half, sewn into the neckline or a side seam. It’s the default for a reason; it just works for most garments.
End-fold labels get used more for smaller tags, things like sizing info tucked into a side seam. Straight-cut labels are flat and sewn on the outside instead, which is common for custom garment tags on hats, bags, that kind of thing. And hang tags aren’t sewn in at all — they hang alongside your main label and give you room for pricing or a bit of brand story, which some brands use well and others just leave blank.
Where You Can Actually Customize
This is where a lot of brands leave value on the table. You can adjust die-cut shapes so the label matches your logo instead of being a plain rectangle. Thread color and background on woven labels. Foil or embossing if you’re going for something more upscale on a leather patch. Sizing that actually fits the garment — a onesie doesn’t need the same label as a winter coat, obviously, but you’d be surprised how often that gets ignored.
These details help keep the finished label practical, consistent, and easy to recognize.
